The first individual release on Ghost Nun comes from electronic artist opalll of the Phillipines. “hala” is opalll’s second release of 2022, and continues his project of blending the sounds of noise and industrial with varying shades of electronic and pop music.

Inspired by the burgeoning electronic scene of the 90s, "hala" is characterised by the snappy, colourful production of the era, taking that music’s raw materials and processing them through layer upon layer of distortion, white noise and studio trickery. The result is an album full of noisy hooks and weirdly catchy passages, wonky and woozy atmospheres anchored by carefully sequenced drum lines, and samples shredded and drenched with distortion and static. There’s even some jazz piano in there.

It's a hugely accomplished, tightly cohesive and satisfying record from a ludicrously talented artist.
